Sensitive skin is common. If you experience stinging, burning, redness or even tightness after using most skincare products, you have sensitive skin. Very dry skin, a tendency to blush and a tendency to break out with pimples also indicate that your skin is sensitive. Having sensitive skin does not mean that you must avoid using cleansers and moisturizers; it simply means that you must use great care in choosing products that do not cause irritation.
Whether you are shopping for cleansers or moisturizing creams, there are several factors to consider when choosing a skincare product for your sensitive skin. Always look for products that do not contain fragrance as the chemicals used to give skincare products fragrance are almost always irritating. Also, opt for products that include as few ingredients as possible. The fewer ingredients, the smaller the chance your skin reacts poorly to that product.
Make sure you read the ingredient labels closely when choosing skincare products. Do not purchase any product that contains alcohol, antibacterial ingredients or retinoids. These all have the potential to cause irritation and dryness.
Choosing a moisturizer to use on your sensitive skin is important since a good moisturizer not only contains ingredients that do not irritate your skin but also helps make your skin less sensitive to other products and chemicals. Look for a moisturizer that contains mineral oil, glycerin or linoleic acid. All of these ingredients prevent your skin from flaking, and skin that is not flaked is less sensitive. Using a moisturizer that contains SPF 15 or higher is also helpful in protecting your skin from sun damage that makes it more sensitive in the long run.
The guidelines listed above are meant to help you find skincare products that leave your skin healthy and refreshed rather than angry and red. Keep in mind, however, that no single product is right for everyone. You may have to try several different products before you find one that does not irritate your skin. Be patient, and always keep the guidelines above in mind when choosing a new product.
